Introduction

Good nutrition is vital for health.  Obvious?  Well not to a lot of the diet industry.  They would have us believe that cutting out this or including that will make us more beautiful and healthier than ever.  The bad news is that there is no quick fix.

The good news is that once you get used to the idea that there is no ‘good’ and ‘bad’ food and that you can eat anything, just not too much (see ‘portion size), eating once more becomes a pleasure and not a cause for anxiety.  And real food tastes great.

I firmly believe that there are no ‘bad’ foods and ‘good’ foods.  A healthy diet includes a wide variety of foods.  There is no one food that can give you all that you need for a healthy and satisfying diet.  A restricted diet may keep you healthy – just – but will it keep you satisfied.  What is a life full of denial?

Moderation is the key.  My friends will laugh when they read this because moderation is not really a word to be found in my vocabulary.  However, I understand the theory and am trying – honest.

I have to confess that I have found that a tub of Ben and Jerry’s with chocolate digestives as a scoop really hits the mark – sometimes.    My point is that no-one is perfect.  Obviously it would be better not to have a whole tub (not a small one, obviously) and to use a spoon instead of biscuits, but if you do have to have a real splurge don’t beat yourself up.  Just don’t it very often.  If you do it enjoy it  make sure you really enjoy it and move on.  Don’t do it quickly, in a corner, full of guilt.  Be out and proud.  One splurge won’t put on pounds.

I’m sharing this with you because I want you to know that I fully understand what it is like to struggle with weight.  I was on so many stupid diets when I was young – I’ve done them all – well I’ve never actually done the cabbage soup.

Now I’m in my 60s, though, I’m much more concerned with nutrition and making sure that my body gets enough good nutrition to keep me healthy.  Good nutrition is a vital part of staying healthy into older age.    I’m not a fanatic, as you can see, but I do try and eat fresh, unrefined food.

Have a look at the other pages and see what you think.  Food is a minefield and people have firm ideas about what they will and won’t eat and I’m not about telling you what to eat.  Read the information, follow the links and make up your own mind.
